Antonio Conte has explained why he didn't shake Jose Mourinho's hand

After all the build-up, it was unquestionably Antonio Conte who got the last laugh over Jose Mourinho on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester United slipped to a 1-0 defeat - their second in three Premier League games - against the Special One's former club.

The two managers were already involved in a spat prior to kick-off after Mourinho told a press conference that other teams liked to "cry" about injuries.
It was little surprise then, that the pair didn't shake hands at the final whistle.

A lot is made of handshakes in the modern game. The vast majority of coaches recognise that while it's only a small gesture, it's the sporting thing to do at the end of the game regardless of the result.
Quite possibly because of the bad blood between himself and Mourinho, Conte instead opted to celebrate with his players on the pitch instead of acknowledging his opposite number in the United dugout.

The Red Devils boss insisted that he had done his best:
"You want me to chase him into the middle of the pitch? I was there, I shook hands with people who were there," he was quoted by Goal's Nizaar Kinsella.

Why Conte didn't shake hands

Yet, when Conte was quizzed on the incident in his post-match presser, he couldn't resist a small dig, explaining why he hadn't shaken hands.
"You have to have the respect on the pitch, not outside the pitch," he said.
The former Italy boss has made it quite clear he doesn't have an awful lot of respect for Mourinho.
That said, he clearly still rates joint-second United and understood how significant it was to get the three points against them.
"It’s an important victory," he added.

"When you play against Manchester United it’s always a massive game. We know very well this team is very strong.
"This type of win is important for our confidence. We showed great desire and passion to win this kind of game.

“We can win or lose but our spirit must be this. Last season our spirit was in every game – we started this season with a lot of problems. We were up and down. This game showed if we want we can."
